“Draw nigh to God and he would draw nigh to you”, James 4:8a

Sometimes back and now, I still talk to go about a lot of things one of which is being really intimate with him. There was a time I knew I was drawing away. I wasn’t sinning, but I didn’t feel so close and had to ask for cleansing. I later got to understand that I was still and is still a Christian. I was in a relationship with him but wasn’t just interacting with him. It’s possible to be friends with someone and not to talk to them for a week right? But you both know you are friends. You’d agree with me that what it does is to create a little distance in the relationship. It gradually becomes hard to talk to such one or even relate like you used to.

How does this fit into Christainity? God wouldn’t always run after us. Remember the Isrealites? When they kept sinning and wouldn’t repent, God let go off them. He loved them yeah but couldn’t stand their sins. God is never far away. Infact, he’s closer than we think and even if we’re separated in anyway, it’s just by a thin line which is taken away after forgiveness.

While studying the book of 2 Chronicles during the time of King Asa, I realized that after he had won the battle against the enemies, God stirred a seer to deliver a message to him. It was very clear,

“2Chronicles 15:1-3, then Azariah son of Obed, moved by the Spirit of God, went out to meet Asa. He said, “Listen carefully, Asa, and listen Judah and Benjamin: God will stick with you as long as you stick with him. If you look for him he will let himself be found; but if you leave him he’ll leave you”.

It was then I realized that we need to deliberately make some moves in order to walk with God. For every walk with God, a step needs to be taken. 2 Chro 7:14 says “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land”.

Matthew 7:7, tells us to ask and we shall receive. James tells us to draw nigh to God and he would draw nigh to us. How do we draw nigh to him? By studying his word and communicating in prayers. It is after doing these that an atmosphere is created for him to draw nigh to us. He has seen our desire to know him and doesn’t he say those who hunger and thirst for righteousness would be satisfied?  Matthew 5:6. An action first before a reaction. Today, stop waiting for God to descend instead engage in spiritual activities that would lift you to where he is. Make a move. Take some steps. It requires commitment and self discipline.
